One seemingly normal afternoon, every computer in the world goes down. In the following days it becomes clear that there will be no easy fix. Adam lives in a quiet community, but suddenly, a society he thought was so neatly structured completely falls apart as people find themselves in a battle to survive. Adam 's neighbor is a former government spy and has the foresight to see how ruthless people will get when they are desperate to survive. Adam and his neighbor quickly establish structure in order to defend their small neighborhood as they face increasingly deadly threats to their community's survival.
This is a true story written by Mya Vanwagonen who finds an old copy of a book called Betty Cornell's Teen-Aged Popularity Guide originally published in the 1950's. Mya, a self proclaimed geek, decides to try the advice in the book right down to buying a girdle and wearing skirts and pearls to school everyday. Through it all Mya discovers what popularity really means. Many times when reading the book, I was struck by the contrast between the type of life Cornell describes in the 1950's with Mya's life living in Brownsville Texas today. Try this book if you want a true story of a girl who finds her real self by getting out of her comfort zone. This book can be found in the non-fiction section under 921 VAN Yarp Book! Don't forget to rate the book after you read it!July of 2014 marks the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of World War I in Europe. Soldier Dog puts readers into the time of World War I while also telling the suspenseful and sometime heartbreaking story of a boy and his dog. After his abusive father pushes him to the edge, Stanley runs away from home and joins the British Messenger Dog Service. Stanley's job is to train dogs to deliver messages on the battlefield. Can Stanley give his heart to a dog that might be killed in action? I highly recommend this book to readers who like action, plot twists and animal stories!! In just a matter of days, 95% of the world's population has been killed by the deadly Bluestar virus. Nadia and her brother Rabbit are one of a handful of people who have received a vaccine for the virus from their uncle, a top government official. With both of their parents dead, Nadia and Rabbit head out from Seattle to drive across the country to West Virginia in order to meet up with relatives they believe survived the pandemic. Throughout their journey they must use every survival tactic they know as well as determine if the people they meet along the way are friend or foe. Will they make it to West Virginia and who will be waiting for them if anyone? |
